France: language and translation guide

Check French accents, punctuation spacing, local date formats, and formal address.

Practical guides for translating files, emails and reviewing results

Languages spoken

French is the main language of public life. Regional and community languages are also spoken, so ask recipients about their preferred language.

Translation use cases

Translation can help you understand travel information, prepare a message to a host, compare product descriptions or draft workplace correspondence involving France. Keep the intended audience and purpose with the text. Machine translation is useful for a first reading; it does not replace a certified translation for an official submission.

Local language information

Check French accents, punctuation spacing, local date formats, and formal address. Keep addresses in their original format where delivery matters, and write month names when a numeric date could be ambiguous. Verify specialist terminology with the receiving organization.

Prepare a clear request for a French recipient

For a reservation enquiry or service request in France, provide the details the recipient needs to act: the relevant booking reference, the requested change and the actual date. Keep the organization’s own name as a reference while translating the surrounding explanation. A polished paragraph is not enough if the proposed change or the person making it becomes unclear.

Review personal names against their authoritative spelling rather than shortening them to suit a presumed first-name and surname pattern. After translation, check that the subject line and message ask for the same thing. If you mention an attachment, attach it in your mail application; StarTranslate does not inspect the outgoing email. For administrative submissions, confirm the accepted language and any certification requirement with the recipient before preparing the final document.
